Everything Started with a Birth

The word “Christmas,” indeed, has Christ in its root. It is actually a shortened form of “Christ’s mass,” which was recorded in its Old (Crīstesmæsse ) and Middle English (Cristemasse) forms during the Middle Ages.

Interestingly, the feast was sometimes called by Anglo-Saxons Nātiuiteð, which originated the modern word “Nativity” and had its roots in Latin nātīvitās (“birth”).

Like in Latin, the Armenian word for Christmas is Ծնունդ (Dzunoont), meaning “birth” (dzunoont). Etymologically, the words for both languages are related. Nātīvitās combines the word nātīvus (“native”) with the suffix – tas , and nātīvus derives from nāscor (“I am born”), which comes from an earlier form gnāscor . This original form has its roots, indeed, in the Proto-Indo-European language (the mother language for both Armenian and Latin), where we find the root *ǵenh (“to give birth”). This is a very prolific root: it originated the Greek word γεννάω (gennáō , “to beget,” from which came the English word genealogy) and several words in Latin, like genus (“offspring,” from which came the English genuine) and natio (“nation”), among others.

Also, believe it or not, the same root produced the Armenian word ծին (dzin ), from which we have the verb ծնիլ (dzunil “to give birth”) in Modern Armenian and, also, the noun dzunoont. How is that? This is because the Proto-Indo-European becomes ծ ( dz ) in Armenian.

Incidentally, the same word dzunoont is, logically, on the basis of the first biblical book. The title of the Book of Genesis was translated into Classical Armenian as Գիրք Ծննդոց (Kirk Dzununtots ), because it gave the genealogy (ծննդաբանութիւն / dzununtapanutiun ) of mankind.

As we see, the root dzin is a prolific one. It was not unexpected that in most recent times it would become a noun: it currently designates the word gene in Armenian.

From the birth of Jesus Christ to the study of genes in the third millennium, the Armenian language finds its way to keep pace with the times.

1) Take your time

2) I had a good time

3) Have a nice day

You Do Not Own Time

We have insisted many times in this column on the importance of thinking in Armenian when speaking Armenian. For that matter, whatever language you speak other than English, you have to think in that particular language. Why? First of all, because you may want to show that you are the owner of that language, instead of the language owning you! Second, because if you start copying English structures when talking in, say, Spanish, you can just become the butt of all jokes by speakers of that language. (If you text message “Mi casa es no su casa,” mirroring “My house is not your house,” rest assured that you may get as many “rolling on the floor laughing” emojis as your interlocutor(s) can type.)

A few examples may be helpful not only to American-born speakers of Armenian or learners of Armenian as a second language, but also to native speakers of Armenian who have lived in an English-speaking milieu for a long time. Phrases calqued from English may come naturally to the former, while the same calques enter the oral language of the latter with the same speed.

We have chosen three most common phrases:

1) Take your time

You take your time to have breakfast, to do your homework, to write a letter, or to mow the lawn. So, you’re doing things at your own pace, right? Right.
Of course, you understood that when someone—born in Boston, in Istanbul, in Paris, or in Beirut—politely suggested to “take your time” and said «Ժամանակդ առ» (Jamanagut arr). You understood correctly, but someone said it wrong. If s/he were really talking in Armenian, the recommendation would have been:

Մի՛ աճապարեր (Mi ajabarer), that is, “Don’t rush!”

While sometimes two unrelated languages may use the same structure to express the same idea, many other times they are both very different one from the other. The Armenian language is not poorer because it uses “Don’t rush” instead of “Take your time.” It simply did not create a second expression to say the same thing. Why? Because you do not own time to take it…

2) I had a good time

In a previous column we have discussed how the verb “to have” has many meanings in English, while its Armenian counterpart ունենալ has exactly one meaning: “to own, to become owner, to receive.” Again, it is hard to believe that you think that you own time. However, this is exactly the impression that you leave when you walk to your car after a party while saying: «Ես լաւ ժամանակ ունեցայ» (Yes lav jamanag oonetsa “I had a good time”). If your interlocutor knows proper Armenian, he might snipe: «Չէ, չունեցար» (Che, choonetsar “No, you didn’t”). The reason is that you do not “have” a good time when going to a party or doing anything else you can imagine related to this sentence. You actually spend a good time. This is how the Armenian speaker thinks: «Ես լաւ ժամանակ անցուցի» (Yes lav jamanag antsootsi). This literally means “I spent a good time.” If it does not sound right, it is only because you are under the charm of the English when trying to speak Armenian.

3) Have a nice day

How many times a day do you say this? Again, the problem that we have is that, since you do not own time in Armenian, you cannot own a day. Therefore, to say «Լաւ օր ունեցէք» (Lav or oonetsek) is pointless, because the concept does not exist in Armenian thinking. You simply wish a good day, and then you say «Լաւ օր ձեզի»  (Lav or tsezi), which literally means “Good day to you” (of course, if it is good, it is nice too). Of course, if you are talking to a friend or family member, it goes without saying that you will say «Լաւ օր քեզի» (Lav or kezi), now using second person in the singular.

How a Star Was Born

Has it occurred to you that the English “star” and its Armenian translation աստղ (asdgh) are also cousins?

The Armenian name Աստղիկ (Asdghig) is sometimes translated as Stella because of their formal resemblance, even though Asdghig was the goddess of love and fertility in Armenian pagan mythology and Stella Maris (“star of the sea”) was actually one of the Latin names for the Virgin Mary.

Actually, Asdghig was the Armenian counterpart for a goddess well-known in various Near Eastern mythologies. The ancient Sumerian goddess Inanna, associated with love, fertility, and other attributes, was later worshipped by the Semitic civilizations of Mesopotamia (Akkadians, Babylonians, and Assyrians) as Ishtar. Ishtar was adored in adjacent lands of Semitic population like Syria and Canaan as Ashtart, which became in Hebrew Ashtoret, better known under the Hellenized form Astarte. The symbol of Inanna-Ishtar-Ashtart was the planet Venus, the most brilliant star in the sky.

It has been suggested that, ultimately, the name Ishtar was derived from the Proto-Semitic feminine noun *attar “heaven, star,” which may share a common origin with the Proto-Indo-European word *h-ster.

This reconstructed word was the common source for most Indo-European languages. Think of Greek aster (compare English “astronomy, astronaut,”), Iranian star, Latin stella (compare English “stellar”), German stern, and many other lesser known words. The Armenian word asdgh (also spelled աստեղ/asdegh in Classical Armenian) seems to be in the middle of its Greek and Latin counterparts, and not that far from English.

Let’s note that the suffix –իկ (ig) has a diminutive, but also endearing quality. Think of the Armenian common word asdghig with the meaning “small star,” equivalent to the English word “starlet.”
